Laundromats should charge for resources used instead of a flat rate. ie; water and energy (heating and duration) consumed. This would encourage use of permanent press, which is usually sufficient and yields longer garment life.

Laundromats could also recycle their lint. The fiber could be used for paper, and I recall hearing tell of a business in San Francisco which produce a custom suit if provided several bags of lint. (A minor problem with recylcing lint is the removal of hair.) If laundromats were to diversify their service model they would also serve as an excellent drop-off point of clothing for donation / recycling / rag-production.
